Thieves rip AC units from Sterling Heights church
When you walk into Hope Community Baptist Church in Sterling Heights, you can?t help but notice the stain glass windows and elaborate display inside of the sanctuary. But the crooks in the area don't want what?s on the other side of the doors, they went straight for the copper, outside.
?You can see they took a pair of cutters and just stripped the whole thing, it?s just down to the bare bones,? said church trustee, Bob Vanscoy. ?
Not one or two, but a total of nine air conditioning units were stolen off the side of the building.

?We have seven of them on this side of the church, two on the other and every single one of them are just gone,? said Vanscoy.
?
The stolen units controlled the temperature inside the hallways, the offices and the Sunday school rooms. Ironically, the church had a plan to stop thieves, but they didn?t act quick enough.
?As a trustee, my group and I have been talking about installing a fence around this area,? said Vanscoy. ?We certainly dropped the ball on that one, not getting the fence up in time.?
The senior pastor, The Rev. George Johnson, told Local 4 this isn?t the first time Hope Community Church has been the target for crime.
?The past several months, people stole piping from our sprinkler system,? said Johnson.
Years ago, computers and AV equipment was stolen along with a lawn mower and yard tools. From now on, members will be keeping a close eye on the property. The people inside are praying for the thieves.
?During last nights prayer session, members of our church were actually saying a prayer for the people to did all of this,? said Johnson. ?They are obviously troubled and struggling and our community is praying for change.?
Sterling Heights police have no leads or suspects.
